Week of May 18 is Visitability Awareness Week

The Visitability Strategy Group recently announced that the Columbus City Council named the week of May 18, 2009 as Visitability Awareness Week. According to the group, visitability is a standard for new home construction that would ensure that all people have equal access to single family homes. Visitability features rely on three basic tenets: (1) An entrance that does not include steps or stairs but is accessible to a person with mobility impairments, (2) main floor doors and hallways that can accommodate a person in a wheelchair and (3) an accessible bathroom with enough room to maneuver. The Visitability Strategy Group encourages people to inform their legislators about supporting visitability.

The Visitability Strategy Group is a coalition whose members represent a variety of interests, including people with disabilities, the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council, state government, non-profit organizations and advocacy organizations. For more information, visit Visitability Ohio.
