Medicaid Buy-In for Workers with Disabilities
The Medicaid Buy-In for Workers with Disabilities (MBIWD) program allows individuals with disabilities who are working to qualify for Medicaid with higher income and resource limits, and buy into Medicaid by paying a premium based on income. The program went into effect April 1, 2008.
Ohioans between the ages of 16 and 64 with a disability (as defined by the Social Security Administration) who are earning up to 250 percent ($26,000 in 2008) of the Federal Poverty Level are eligible. Individuals with higher incomes should still apply because income disregards, deductions, credits, and work expenses are considered in determining financial eligibility.
Individuals already receiving Medicaid services who are interested in MBIWD should contact their caseworker or the Medicaid Consumer Hotline at 1-800-324-8680. A face-to-face interview is not required for this program.
Individuals who are new to Medicaid can apply. If the person does not have a disability determination from the Social Security Administration, Ohio Medicaid will make a determination. The individual will be asked to provide medical evidence of their disability.
Application forms are available on the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) Web site (see Medicaid Buy-In for Workers with Disabilities (MBIWD) Application), or at your county department of Job and Family Services office.
