New procedure helps individuals applying for medical assistance programs

OLRS, Pro-Seniors, several legal aid societies and disability organizations effectively advocated for a new administrative procedure that safeguards the personal liberties of an individual unable to access verifications due to a physical or mental impairment and to prevent any physical or mental disability from negatively impacting the Medicaid eligibility determination process. The procedure instructs county departments of job and family services on how to assist individuals with physical or mental impairments who are attempting to apply for Medicaid or access their own resources for self support. The procedure applies to all medical assistance programs administered by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The new procedure, contained in administrative rule 5101:1-38-01.7, goes into effect on August 1, 2009.
