The Ohio Legal Rights Service (OLRS) has taken steps to ensure that the pages on its Web site are at least minimally accessible to people with disabilities who use assistive technology to access the Internet.
OLRS complies with State of Ohio IT Policy - Web Site Accessibility, ITP-F.3 (PDF file), issued by the Ohio Office of Information Technology. This policy establishes minimum Web site accessibility requirements for information and services provided on state-controlled Web sites. The requirements include compliance with the accessibility standards of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. These standards are detailed in Section 1994.22 of the Code of Federal Regulations (Web-based intranet and internet information and applications).
OLRS also follows the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 1.0 which are standards created by the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). WCAG 1.0 compliance levels are described as single-A (meets all priority 1 checkpoints), double-A (meets all priority 1 and 2 checkpoints), and triple-A (meets all priority 1, 2, and 3 checkpoints). This Web site conforms to the single-A (priority 1) compliance level, and many of the priority 2 and 3 checkpoints.
OLRS takes additional steps to ensure that its Web site is accessible. Pages are periodically tested using assistive technology, such as a voice browser or screen reader program. A text-only version of the Web site is simultaneously updated with the graphic version of the Web site. Whenever possible, PDF documents are also provided in a text-only format. And the Web Site Administrator continually assesses the Web site to improve usability and accessibility.
